Well Designed E-Commerce Sites

Opera Mage

Here’s a great showcase of some very attractive, well designed e-commerce websites.  Most e-commerce sites focus on functionality and the number of products that can be crammed onto a page.  Good design and intuitive navigation usually takes a backseat.  Buy.com and Best Buy are a couple of sites that come to mind. This list from design website, Smashing Magazine, includes both well known sites as well as small specialty sites.

How iTunes Is Utilizing Facebook Fan Page

iTunes Facebook

Baja Fresh, the Mexican fast food chain, ran a Facebook campaign this week to get people to sign up as fans of their page.  They were giving away a free burrito to anyone that signed up as a fan and brought in the confirmation code to a participating Baja Fresh restaurant.  This campaign reminded me of something Starbucks and a few other companies have utilized on Facebook in the past.  These campaigns are great to attract fans but what do you do when they actually sign up?  Surprisingly most companies do nothing and they become just another fan page for the average Facebook user.  One company that I think is doing a great job with their Facebook page is Apple.  Apple ran a promotion a few weeks back where they were giving away 20 songs on iTunes from up and coming bands for signing up to their fan page.  I couldn’t pass on 20 free songs so I signed up and got my songs.  Granted, most of the songs were misses for me, but I found a few gems.  Since signing up, iTunes now appears on my feed on a daily basis highlighting new music, artists, concerts, compilations, TV shows, movies, etc.  I don’t go to the iTunes store on a regular basis so I find the feed to be  invaluable.  I’ve even purchased a few songs that Apple highlighted on my feed.  I’d like to see more companies take advantage of their fan pages in creative ways that make sense to the brand, especially since they’ve already done the hard work by capturing eyeballs in terms of fans.

Use Twitter To Get Latest Traffic Info

commutweet-logo

By now we all know about the real-time communications aspect of Twitter.  CommuTweet is a new service looking to leverage that real-time aspect to provide traffic updates for commuters regardless of the mode of transport (ie. rail, car, bus, etc).  It is a free service and all you need is a Twitter account to get started.  You can view and post either on the CommuTweet website or through Twitter.  CommuTweet is also subscribed to all the official public transit feeds, so there are plenty of updates even if users aren’t generating them.  I haven’t tried it out for the New York subway system but being underground and not getting a signal might not be very useful.

Starbucks has recently surpassed Coca-Cola as the most popular brand on Facebook.  It is a company that has been utilizing social media aggressively for some time now and is one of the better companies at using social media to extend their brand and also use the medium in creative and engaging ways.  Social media is a strong component of their marketing strategy instead of an afterthought as it is with most other large companies.  Brandweek interviews Alexandra Wheeler who is the director of digital strategy at Starbucks on how Starbucks is currently using social media as well as their upcoming initiatives.

The Military And Social Networking

The Pentagon recently launched a study of how to best utilize social networking sites.  The military wants to take advantage of the communication capabilities of social media but limit exposure to viruses, security leaks, etc.   Also, many servicemen and servicewomen currently use social media tools to keep in touch with family and friends back home.  Recommendations from the study will be out sometime in September.

Sharing On Social Media Sites More Popular Than Sharing By Email

add to any

My friends and I throughout the years constantly sent articles, links, videos, etc. via email.  Lately I find myself clicking on the “share this article/video, etc.” link to share via Facebook.  One of the companies that provide the share widget on content sites, AddToAny, has released some interesting data on how people share content.  According to AddToAny, Facebook now dominates sharing, with 24 percent of shares from the widget, which beats out email at 11.1 percent, making Facebook the most popular way to share content.
